Some people plan their Wine Tram day around the wine. Others are already eyeing up the picnic spots, checking restaurant menus or looking for the best vineyard views.
The beauty of the Franschhoek Wine Tram is that there’s no single way to do it. With different estates, experiences and things to see along the way, you can put together a day that suits you.
So, which Wine Tram personality are you?
The Wine Taster
You’ve done your research. You know which estates you want to visit, you’ve checked out the tasting menus and you may already have a bottle or two in mind for the trip home.
For you, a day on the Franschhoek Wine Tram is all about discovering new wines, tasting your way through the valley and finding a few new favourites along the way.

The Picnic Person
Give you a picnic basket, a patch of lawn and a bottle of something chilled and you’re happy.
Several estates along the Wine Tram routes offer picnic experiences, making it easy to add a little al fresco dining to your day in the Winelands. Think good food, beautiful scenery and a glass of wine within easy reach.
Your ideal day: Pick a Wine Tram route with a picnic stop, pack your sunglasses and find yourself a good spot.

The Lunch Person
For you, a Wine Tram day needs a good restaurant, a great menu and preferably a vineyard view to go with it.
Luckily, several estates along the routes offer restaurants and dining experiences, so lunch can be just as much a part of the itinerary as the wine tasting.
Your ideal day: Take a look at the restaurants along your chosen line and book ahead where needed.

For you, hopping off the Wine Tram is a chance to wander through vineyards, explore the grounds and take in the scenery before heading on to your next stop.
Your ideal day: Look for estates with gardens, walks, cellar experiences or plenty of space to explore.

The “Just One More Stop” Person
You planned your Wine Tram day, picked your stops and then, somewhere along the way, decided there was time for just one more.
With so many estates and experiences to discover, we can’t blame you.
Your ideal day: Keep an eye on the timetable, enjoy every stop and make sure you leave enough time to catch your next tram or bus.
The Planner
You’ve already created the WhatsApp group and printed out the timetable – you’re all about finding a journey that works for the whole group.
The good news? There are several ways to experience the Franschhoek Wine Tram, including the Group Experience, which takes care of the planning so you can focus on having a good day.

A Few Tips Before You Book
- Try not to fit too many estates into one day. We recommend 3 – 4 estates to visit in a day.
- Choose a route based on the kind of experience you want, not just the number of stops.
- Book restaurants ahead of time, especially over weekends and public holidays.
- Pairing experiences may require pre-booking and are subject to availability. Check with the estate directly before your visit.
- Leave space in your day for spontaneous stops or longer lunches.
- If you’re travelling with children, look out for estates with lawns, picnics, and outdoor seating.
